We are starting with workflows for retouching and adjusting images, some of the most common Photoshop use cases.įor now, Photoshop for web is limited to Adobe Creative Cloud subscribers. Starting today, you will see some limited editing features like simple layers, selection tools, masking, and more. We are beginning to explore Photoshop editing workflows on the web as part of the beta.

During this initial public beta offering, the web client will primarily be used to make “basic” edits to documents stored on your Adobe account, but it works with PSD files. In a blog post, Adobe explains that evolutions to the web, many of which were pioneered by Google services and Chrome, enable the company to bring a simplified version of Photoshop to the web.

At first, Photoshop on the web will be somewhat feature-limited compared to Adobe’s full-fledged desktop programs. The tide is finally changing, though, as Adobe today announced that Photoshop is coming to the web and in turn, Chromebooks starting with a public beta.Īnnounced as a part of “Adobe MAX,” it was revealed that a version of Photoshop will be coming to the web, though with one caveat.

These are merely some suggestions: branch out a bit, look beyond Adobe, and by far more feature-rich and fun free apps are to be found for the young creative working on a Chromebook.Chromebooks rely primarily on web apps to run just about everything, with Android apps plugging some of the holes, but even that left Chromebook owners without access to the Adobe Creative suite. Vectr is also available as an online app that works in the browser. Be careful to get it from the original site (an app called vectr on the google play market is a very different app!): Vectr a simple Illustrator alternative, with a native Chromebook version available as well. Krita is very powerful indeed with no strings attached. You will find it on the Google Play market. Krita on Chromebook is the same as the desktop version: no corners cut.

It also opens PSD files, and delivers a fully featured toolset for painting, as well as a pretty good compositing experience.

Īnother great alternative is Krita, of which the full version was released a while ago for Android/Chromebooks. If your students need to continue work on their PSD files, then PhotoPea provides a very similar Photoshop experience (online web browser only). The Android apps might share the same name, but that is pretty much it.Īlternative apps (outside the Adobe ecosystem) allow for much more creative freedom. The free apps cannot hold a candle to the actual CC applications, of course: they absolutely pale in comparison in regards to features and options. Some of the apps have in-app purchases to enable more functionality (Premiere, Lightroom), while others are completely free (PS Mix, Illustrator Draw, PS Sketch).

All apps can be installed for free as long as the user has a registered Adobe account: which means your students must be 13 years or older. Adobe's Android apps are rather (severely) limited "versions" of their bigger siblings. The regular CC apps are obviously not available for Chromebooks / Android.
